"When raising children in harmony with nature, they’ll grow to know how to protect it."
For most children, pre-school is the first official learning environment in which they find themselves. We’ve taken this responsibility seriously, backed up by research that shows that good design and peaceful surroundings create an invaluable sense of calm and security for young minds and bodies.
At Little Earth, we want our little ones to have a good understanding of sustainability and the part they can play in maintaining ecological balance. As such, the design of our school seeks to make this a part of their everyday experience with a strong connection to the outdoors imbued in every aspect of our school’s design. Our spacious classrooms have high ceilings that ensure an abundance of natural light all year round, and we have stable doors opposite the sliding doors in each class that secure good airflow.
Our commitment to being water-wise means we have water tanks positioned all around the school to recycle rainwater. Our children not only understand why and how we harvest rainwater but also learn about the water cycle and how Cape Town’s wet winters are positive in that they set us up for summer. Every morning, our children are encouraged to recycle their waste by using the designated bins provided in the foyer. Furthermore, they participate in the planting and harvesting of our veggie and herb garden that grows food for the healthy meals they enjoy on a daily basis. As a result, they understand the wonder of food, where it comes from, how it affects their bodies and how it helps them to thrive.
The whole layout of Little Earth leans towards teaching our little ones to be kind and respectful towards nature. For, after all, Mother Nature has the best box of crayons.
